But is that due to the shave? Experts say no! In fact, this phenomenon is probably a genetic anomaly that is not normally caused by shaving.
Pili Multigemini: Are two hairs in a follicle “normal”?
The official medical term for this is pili multigemini and is actually not that rare, but very few people notice it. Even if you may not have noticed it, maybe hair will grow that way too.
But do not worry, the whole thing is not painful and the hair can simply be shaved off. So Pili multigemini is relatively normal and nothing to worry about.
How is it created?
Pili multigemini occurs when the tip of the hair divides so that two shafts are formed. In women, this usually occurs under the arms and legs, while in men it is usually seen on the face. Even in children this can happen, in this case upside down. Basically, a hair follicle grows as normal as it should, and another hair bulb emerges at the base. The hair bud then splits as it grows. The result: two hairs from a follicle.
Normally, only one hair would grow from a follicle. Although researchers have understood the basic mechanisms in this process, they are not quite sure why this can happen. But they believe that genetic factors play a big role in it.
How do you deal with this weird symptom?
If you notice something like this and it does not bother you, just ignore it. But if you see it in several parts of your body and you want to get rid of this phenomenon, here are some tips:
Do not rip off!
Some people are so annoyed by the “two-hair follicles” that they pull them out with tweezers. Unfortunately, the two hairs that come from the individual follicle are usually deeper than normal hair. Plus, even if you get them out, they’ll grow soon anyway.
Do not shave!
Like plucking shaving does not help a bit. In fact, by continuously shaving two hairs in a follicle, you increase the chances of developing inflammation. Shave your hair only when necessary, and leave it alone otherwise and do not think about this strange symptom.
Electrolysis is something that can actually cause the hair follicles to “fall asleep”. The catch: If this problem occurs anywhere on your body, electrolysis can quickly become quite expensive. Can two hairs be prevented from growing out of one follicle?
Unfortunately two hairs growing out of one follicle can’t be prevented, because this is a genetic disorder. Most genetic disorders can not be resolved despite modern medicine. If you have two hairs from a follicle, you can not do anything about it. In rare cases, however, this phenomenon can be caused by UV radiation or too frequent hair treatment. The hair growth is genetically regulated and includes 3 different phases – the hair grows about 1.25 cm per month on average:
- Anagen phase
- Katagene phase
- Telogen phase
The very fact that growth is genetically regulated shows how feeble-minded most promises of hair growth are.
1 – Anagen Phase
The Anagene phase is also called “growth phase”. The hair may be in this phase for up to 6 years – the duration of this phase is genetically determined. The cells in the papilla (see picture) divide and produce new fibers, the hair bulb digs deep into the dermis to ensure an ideal supply to the hair. About 85% of all hair is in the Anagen phase. The longer the hair is in this phase, the longer it can grow, the growth rate can not be influenced, nor the length of the phase.

3 – Telogen phase
The telogen phase is also referred to as “resting phase”, the hair is in this resting phase for about 1 – 4 months. The skin cells that surround the hair continue to grow in the resting phase of the hair and thus ensure it stays in place for a while, even if it is no longer connected to the bloodstream. Thus, without attacking the reserves of the body, it can still serve for a while while the follicle is resting.
After a while, the follicle begins to grow again, making the junction of the hair shaft softer and more unstable. The shaft can become loose and the hair falls out. Within about 2 weeks, a new stem grows when the telogen phase is complete and the anagen phase begins again.
How do I get long and healthy hair?
The growth of hair is, as we have just learned, mainly genetically predisposed and neither the growth phase, speed nor the duration of the phases can be influenced – so it makes sense at all to do something? Can I do anything at all?
Yes, it makes sense, though the length and growth rate can not be influenced, we can maintain the hair health and minimize premature termination – there are some tips and tricks on it:
